Cyclathon 2007

This years cyclathon was blessed with great weather. The Lord graciously provided cooler temparatures for our ride from Abbotsford to Harrison and back on July 14. Due to the smaller than expected turn-out, we reduced the guide led portion of the ride from 2 days down to 1. So on Saturday the 14th we ended up riding around 140km. Many of the riders completed their planned mileage for the weekend the following day on their own.

We want to thank Earl Klassen and his team for keeping us safe and leading us on this most beautiful route.

Before the ride, we reflected on Psalm 121 and the route was a true reminder of how good our God the creator really is.

Psalm 121
I will lift up my eyes to the mountains;
From where shall my help come?
My help comes from the LORD,
Who made heaven and earth.
He will not allow your foot to slip;
He who keeps you will not slumber.
Behold, He who keeps Israel
Will neither slumber nor sleep.
The LORD is your keeper;
The LORD is your shade on your right hand.
The sun will not smite you by day,
Nor the moon by night.
The LORD will protect you from all evil;
He will keep your soul.
The LORD will guard your going out and your coming in
From this time forth and forever.

Behind the scenes

Every month, Home Essentials kits are given to people in need. But who packs them?
Who sorts the incoming donations that then go into these kits? Who moves the boxes? Cleans the bathroom? Sweeps the floor? Over 75% of the volunteers that give their time at Gather and Give are persons referred to us by Mental Health Agencies. We work alongside Triumph, Gastown Vocational Services, Coast Foundation, and Midtown Mental Health to place people in our warehouse for personal growth and to help them increase their skill sets. It is our hope that volunteering here will help these individuals to take steps in meeting their goals.
One particular volunteer has successfully made the transition out of his group home. For nine years he rarely went out and although he tried different volunteer placements, his fears and paranoia caused by schizophrenia would overpower him and he would retreat to his safe haven-home. After a few bumps and bruises, this volunteer has succesfully showed up to every one of his shifts for a month. He calls if he can't make it, and he loves coming. He has become more enthusiastic in his work and he feels that his parents, especially his dad, would be proud of his work here. What a change! I'm learning that sometimes it's the small steps we walk alongside others that truly bring meaning to our going.
